Five. For your Final Paper, you must demonstrate an understanding of a topic in psychology

The summative assessment for this course is a Final Paper that is due in Week Five.  For your Final Paper, you must demonstrate an understanding of a topic in psychology beyond the information presented in the course textbook.  Incorporate material from across the course, by describing and applying psychology knowledge as you integrate new research findings, into a cohesive and well-written paper.  This learning activity will facilitate the development of research techniques, critical thinking, and writing skills that are necessary to be successful in the field of psychology.  You may include personal experiences as examples to explain concepts and inform your audience. You will have already selected a research topic from the list below in Week Three of the course.  You must continue to use your selected topic.  The topics include: Then, address the following criteria as you write your Final Paper: The Final Paper:

Watch the following: Read the assigned chapters in your text and the following article: Compare and contrast the video with the article and what you read in your textbook regarding Eating Disorders. Which of the assessment and treatment philosophies do you agree with most? Explain in a 2-3 page APA formatted paperrr Go to the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator ( ). Locate three treatment facilities in your hometown (or three facilities nearby) and identify what types of services these facilities provide. Go to the Partnership for a Drug Free America home page ( ). This page includes personal stories of past drug/alcohol abuse and the challenges that resulted from it. Pick two stories listed on the page and write about them, including information on the abuser’s family history, drugs used, family dysfunction because of the drug use, treatment received, and reasons for getting clean.

In Part 1, you addressed the role of dopamine in the underlying cause of Parkinson’s Disease and its treatment. Dopamine is also implicated in 2 other disorders, schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to the National Institute of Mental Health (2012), schizophrenia is a severe disorder affecting 1% of the population. Although it is not as disabling, ADHD affects approximately 9% of elementary school children. For both conditions, the neurotransmitter dopamine has been implicated. Discuss the following: Explain the role of dopamine in the symptoms of each disorder as well as treatment approaches. How is dopamine related to norepinephrine and epinephrine? What other roles does dopamine play in other nervous systems in the following nervous system functions? Learning and memory Reinforcement Addiction Sexual behavior Provide at least 2 references from scientific research. In-text citations and the reference list should follow APA format. Reference

For this week, you will interview yourself while considering the concepts of “power” and “privilege” (or if you have a friend or family member that is willing, they could interview you with your pre-designed questions). How creative you get is up to you. Here’s the scenario for your interview: You are yourself (so speak from your perspective). Envision that you are a therapist who works with multiple clients in multiple settings (e.g., in-home, telehealth, in office) and you have clients that are from multiple races/genders/sexual orientations/backgrounds/etc. Most of your clients live in poverty and/or do not have a high school diploma, some of your clients are considered disabled). You were picked for this interview on for a local family therapy organization because of your work with such a diverse population. You will present your interview in Kaltura. References: Include a minimum of 3 scholarly resources.

For each of the following kinds of Laws, pick at least one of the four grounds for justification: legal moralism, the harm principle, legal paternalism, and the offense principle.  And construct an argument designed to justify the law.  You may not agree either with the law or  with the argument; the exercise is to see if you can connect the law to the (allegedly} justifying principle.  For many laws, more than one kind of justification is possible, so there can be more than one good answer for many of these. 1.  Laws against shoplifting 2.  Laws against adultery 3.  Laws against suicide 4.  Laws against forgery 5.  Laws against spitting on the sidewalk 6.  Laws against driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol 7.  Laws against marriage between two of the same sex 8.  Laws that require drivers of cars to have driver’s licenses

So far, we have discussed the ways that scientific findings can complement Scripture, check our interpretation of Scripture, and provide reliable frameworks for understanding much of the world around us. However, some argue that science has limitations, particularly in the areas of ethics and morality. For example, science can tell us how atom bombs are made, but it cannot tell us whether atom bombs be made. Meanwhile, there are others who argue that science answer moral questions. For example, neuroscientist and philosopher Sam Harris argues that science should be an authority on moral issues because it can tell us about the conditions that promote human well-being. Please watch Dr. Harris’ (2010) TED talk (or read the attached transcript) on this topic. Dr. Harris’ provides several examples of situations where, in his opinion, science provides a better roadmap for morality than does religion. Early Adulthood in the Media In this unit, you learned about early adulthood in terms of physical, cognitive, and personality development, and major social life events. For this assignment, you will reflect on those topics and how they are portrayed in popular media. Think about a film or television show that features early adults as main characters. You can choose to watch one of the following films for this assignment (if you want to choose something else, email me first for approval): Take notes while watching the movie/tv show. Look for that were discussed in this unit. Some examples include: Select that were present in the movie/tv show, and select from the movie/tv show that best portray those themes. Write a 2-3 page paper that follows this format (minimum 6 full paragraphs…remember, a full paragraph is at least 4 sentences long, beginning with a topic sentence):

You were introduced to a family in the structural family therapy demonstration video in this unit’s study (linked in Resources). Use the information about the family from the session you watched as your guide, and keep in mind what you read in each text (chapter 10) about goal development and treatment planning. Then, complete the following: (300 words or more) Based on what you learned about the client family from the demonstration video (linked in Resources), imagine you are the therapist who will see them for their next visit. Identify an intervention from the structural family therapy model that you would apply in the session. In this discussion, briefly describe the intervention, including the following: (300 words or more) Use the literature from the unit and any additional literature to support your discussion post. This is a much trickier question that it seems at first glance. In order to respond, you need to ask yourself two crucial questions. First, what does it mean to be a “modern” parent – what are the challenges that modern parents face that make parenting especially hard in the 21st century? Second, you need to define what “good parenting” is. What is the metric we use to define success as parents? The responses to this question are likely to be quite diverse, but that’s okay. An excellent response will address the two crucial questions, which lead to an answer that incorporates at least 3 of the weekly learning resources (include citations and references). In addition, find and incorporate at least one credible news article or journal article that supports your response. This article should be no more than 2 years old. http://ezproxy.umgc.edu/login?url=http://site.ebrary.com/lib/umuc/reader.action?ppg=300&docID=10581305&tm=1415296208178 http://ezproxy.umgc.edu/login?url=http://site.ebrary.com/lib/umuc/reader.action?ppg=326&docID=10581305&tm=1415296138640 http://ezproxy.umgc.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=96280252&site=eds-live&scope=site http://ezproxy.umgc.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=f5h&AN=92690559&site=eds-live&scope=site

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the text and review the required articles for this week. The risk-benefit calculation for any drug assumes a correct diagnosis of the disorder. Many investigators and clinicians feel the current epidemic of child psychiatric disorders is largely due to inappropriate diagnosis. Evaluate the risk and benefits of using psychoactive drugs in children correctly diagnosed with a disorder versus those incorrectly diagnosed with a disorder. Consider the risks and benefits of not treating (drug treatment) a child because he or she is not correctly diagnosed with a disorder.  In your evaluation summarize the natural course of the disorder, the drug action on the neurotransmitter systems in question, and the likelihood of short-term, long-term, and permanent positive and negative effects of drug treatment. Make sure to take into account the ethical dimension of this risk-benefit calculation.

Children and adolescents tend to engage in so-called “black and white” thinking. In other words, they tend to judge people and situations in dualistic, rather than relativistic, terms. In early adulthood, individuals begin to reason about situations using a more flexible framework that helps them to resolve contradictions between different perspectives. Describe a situation in which you or someone you know has had to move beyond “black and white” thinking and has been able to develop a more relativistic perspective. Answer the following: Support your arguments with research, citing sources. Write your initial response in 150–200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. By , post your response to the appropriate . Through , review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. Ask a question, remark on an analysis presented, or suggest an alternative view. Be sure to formulate a thoughtful and substantive response.

The World Health Organization (n.d.) identifies health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being” (p. 1). This quote refers to the notion that health should not be reduced to a single, biological source; rather, biology must be considered in relation to other psychological and social factors. George Engel, a psychiatrist in the 1970s, developed the biopsychosocial model to avoid the pitfalls of reductionism so often associated with the traditional medical model. A practitioner using the model to diagnose and treat depression might consider the patient’s family history of depression (biological factor), life stressors, such as the loss of a job (psychological factors), and level of social support from family and friends (social factor). In this discussion, you will explore the biopsychosocial model in more detail and how it can be applied to a variety of different health issues. a response to the following:

“Groups as Systems.” Zajonc states, “Synergy can take either a physical or a mental form. The physical presence of others is often arousing, so more work is accomplished. Even ants work harder when there is more than one of them on the job” (Henman, n.d., p.2). In the mental sense, synergy forms when a type of collective intelligence and shared memory begin to develop as the group matures. Reflect on a group experience where you noticed this shift to synergy with your group. (Some ideas: at a human services agency where you work, a different occupation, serving on a committee, a group in college, etc.) Describe this experience as vividly as possible, with plenty of detail and analysis of as many group members (in regards to their contributions to attaining synergy) that you can recall. Jack and Susan are a young couple who have come to you for help. Five years ago, they opened a Greek restaurant with Jack’s Grandmother (and all her Greek recipes). Their restaurant has now become one of the most popular spots in town. This past year they had their first child, and this has made it difficult to keep up with everything at the restaurant. They share a love of cooking, but the demands of keeping up a successful business and family are becoming overwhelming. Jack’s grandmother is unable to keep up with the busy pace at work and seems more interested in spending time with her great-grandbaby. How would you apply the principles outlined in Modules/Weeks 1–7 to help Jack and Susan with their business? Cloud, H. (2008). . New York, NY: HarperCollins. ISBN: 9780061466434. Stoltzfus, T. What raw materials combine to create human emotions? How does the brain construct emotion? Certain theories suggest that emotions hinge on the axes of the following pairs of dimensions: pleasure-misery and arousal-sleep. Does this formula capture the variability of human emotion? Consider the interplay between cognition and emotion. Some theories posit that emotions consist of automatic responses to stimuli. Other theories suggest that cognitive processes influence the ways in which people perceive emotions. For this Discussion, select a theory of emotions. Consider why the theory you selected is optimal for the classification of emotions. a brief description of the theory you selected from the articles in the Learning Resources. Then explain why this theory is optimal for the classification of emotions. Finally, describe the SPAARS model and explain how it relates to the theory you selected. Support your response using the Learning Resources and current literature.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the text and review the required articles for this week. Humans have engaged in psychoactive drug use, sometimes in formal (ceremonial) settings and sometimes recreationally, since before recorded history. It has only been in the last century or so that abuse and addiction have become large-scale problems. Using the literature and your own insights into these issues, formulate an argument as to why the problem has reached its current scale.  In your discussion, evaluate the employment of psychoactive drugs from the aspects of a risk-benefits analysis and ethical considerations such as the risk of addiction versus the cost of punitive action. Also explain purely pharmacological issues such as pharmacokinetics and routes of drug administration and dose. If needed, include factors such as supply, cultural attitudes to drug use, and the context of drug use.

Television provides us with many interesting examples of interpersonal and neurotic behaviors. In this assignment, you will delve into the life and actions of some of your favorite television characters and analyze them using Horney’s coping strategies. Interestingly, Horney’s three coping strategies for one’s neurotic needs correlate very well with three of Adler’s different personality types: Using Horney’s theory of coping with neurotic needs with three different interpersonal orientations, select a TV program of your choice containing a character that Horney would identify as exhibiting neurotic behaviors. As you watch a full episode of this show, focus on this character and tally each instance of moving-toward, moving-against, and moving-away behavior. Research Horney’s theory using your textbook, the Internet, and the Argosy University online library resources. I chose Impulse Control Disorder. Why you find it interesting or compelling; The reason why I selected the concept, I find it interesting. What about this idea or concept do you want to learn more about; Why children and adolescents severely struggle to control their emotions and behaviors. Impulse control disorders are characterized by chronic problems in which people lack the ability to maintain self-control. Children and adolescents with impulse control disorders frequently engage in repetitive, destructive behaviors despite the adverse consequences that arise from the participation in those behaviors (Resource Treatment Center, 2018). Terminology from the Learning Resources; I think Impulse Control Disorder can fall under Cognitive psychology, which refers to the study of human mental processes and their role in thinking, feeling, and behaving. The related discipline of cognitive neuroscience uses neuroimaging methods to relate activity in the brain to behavioral measurements (Kellogg, 2016).

Conflicts display widely different characteristics, which means professionals working to resolve them must have a wide repertoire of intervention strategies to contribute to their resolution. Thus far, you have explored different approaches to conflict based on style; cultural influences on conflict; and strategies that address power, rights, and/or interests. There are, however, some commonalities to conflict intervention strategies. By distilling these similarities, you may begin to develop a framework on which to build your own philosophy and working system of intervention strategies. This week’s Assignment asks you to synthesize information about conflict resolution strategies. In order to successfully do this, you should not only review this and previous weeks’ Learning Resources but also conduct your own research using the Walden Library and reputable academic sources on the Internet. NEED SOMEONE WITH SCIENCE? PSYCHOLOGY/ RESEARCH BACKGROUND In the context of research design, two types of validity, which speak to the quality of different features of the research process, are considered: internal validity and external validity. Assuming that the findings of a research study are internally valid—i.e., the researcher has used controls to determine that the outcome is indeed due to manipulation of the independent variable or the treatment—external validity refers to the extent to which the findings can be generalized from the sample to the population or to other settings and groups. Reliability refers to the replicability of the findings. For this Discussion, you will consider threats to internal and external validity in quantitative research and the strategies used to mitigate these threats. You will also consider the ethical implications of designing quantitative research. With these thoughts in mind: a selection of your classmates’ postings.

Based on what you have learned so far in this course, create a PowerPoint presentation that addresses each of the following points. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. Use clear headings that allow your professor to know which bullet you are addressing on the slides in your presentation. Support your content with at least four (4) citations throughout your presentation. Make sure to reference the citations using the APA writing style for the presentation. Include a slide for your references at the end. Follow best practices for PowerPoint presentations related to text size, color, images, effects, wordiness, and multimedia enhancements. Each slide should have a graphic and very few words.  In a separate Word file, create a script to use when giving this presentation (about 50 words per content slide – 500 words total).  Submit both files to the dropbox.

The various codes of ethics that guide the counseling profession provide counselors with several standards for ethical practice. However, it is possible for a counselor to have to apply a combination of these codes of ethics when delivering counseling services to their clients. Therefore, comparing codes of ethics and integrating the standards into professional practice is an essential skill for an ethical counselor. For this Assignment, create a summary of the codes of ethics you will be using in this course. Then, explore two different codes of ethics and consider how these codes apply to your work as a future counselor. Purchase the answer to view it

**THIS ASSIGNMENT MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 4-5 HOURS (By 11 PM EST tonight, 4/16)** I have attached what you need to read (the textbook). The instructions are down below. Please try not to use too many complicated words: For example, instead of writing “monumental”, write “big”. Also, the assignment requires a Christian Bible verse (or Scripture) wherever you think it fits in. Thank you so much!! Question: The textbook discusses a number of ideas that may help explain how spiritual development takes place in childhood. In your initial thread use at least 250 but no more than 400 words to describe one of these ideas and tell why you believe it is valid. Use information from our textbook, personal observation/experience, and Scripture to support your position. Be sure to identify your source(s) with at least two APA citations (one from our textbook and one from Scripture).

Although there are many controversial topics in social psychology, this week’s theme of altruism versus egoism is one of the most provocative. The debate over whether humans are capable of pure altruism versus egoism is typically witnessed in the philosophy realm. However, there have been many social psychology studies conducted to determine whether or not humans are, in fact, capable of pure altruism. There is sound research to support both sides of the argument. Leslie Snow manages a team of five help desk operators. The cubicles of the operators are located a floor below Leslie’s office. Each operator is required to log help desk calls into a team database. This database tracks the nature of a problem, the length of the call, and whether the problem was fixed or sent to the engineering department for further investigation. Leslie has a busy schedule, and it is not possible for her to monitor the performance of her team members sitting on a different floor. Therefore she decides to assess their performance solely on the basis of reports queried from the database. What five personality traits does differential psychology focus on identifying? Is it important for managers to understand their employees’ differences? Why or why not? Explain your viewpoint by giving a minimum of two specific examples. Purchase the answer to view it

This essay will require you to explore the role of culture in assessment and treatment. Create a hypothetical case by first identifying an individual’s culture (military, female, African American, college student, New Yorker, etc.), and secondly a substance abuse problem (alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamines, opioids, etc.). Then describe a specific treatment strategy that would be sensitive to the person’s culture and their addiction. Think about how the person self-identifies with the culture, cultural explanation of the illness, cultural practices re the substance, and treatment barriers. I want you to carefully consider how a treatment plan might look different for an American Indian with an alcohol addiction vs. a homeless person with a meth addiction, for example. The central idea is well developed and clarity of purpose runs throughout the paper Evidence of critical, careful thought and insight Evidence and examples are specific, while the focus remains tight

In Week One, you created an annotated bibliography. It is now time to take that research and begin working on your Intervention Proposal. One of the main components of an intervention proposal is the literature review. This week you will be drafting a portion of the literature review that you will include in your Week Six Intervention Proposal. For this week, choose three to four articles that include in a mini literature review that you will build on during Week Six to complete your Intervention Proposal. These articles should all be recent (published within the past 10 years). You should also cite other material (e.g., seminal works about the theories) as appropriate. In your literature review: The literature review must be four to six pages, excluding title and reference pages, and it must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Pulling Theory Together Much of what you are reading this week will be used in your genogram project, so it will be important for you to digest these phrases and concepts as you read, applying them (at least mentally at this point) to your own life and family (your family of origin and your current family system). As you will find, there is a great deal of rich information in this book. Please feel free to comment on that which strikes you as well as responding to the prescribed post below. After reflecting on the ideas of individuation, separation, cutoffs, etc., please write a reaction about these processes in your own life. What is most difficult in considering these concepts (for you)? How have you gained insight into your own family relationships through these readings? How might this information serve you when considering others’ relational contexts?

The right of a parent to decide how to raise their children is considered a fundamental right, which means that government interference with that right must be for a compelling reason such as child abuse or neglect. In the case of Native American children, children were often removed from their tribal homes and placed in child welfare systems throughout the nation that were not culturally similar. In response to this, the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) was passed in 1978. As the CPS investigator you have learned that Anne may possibly have Native American ancestry. This is your first case regarding a child from a Native American ancestry, so you will need to research the provisions of ICWA to ensure you are well informed. You are asked by your supervisor to write a 2-3 page paper outlining your knowledge of the following: Answer the following questions:

Behaviorism and psychoanalysis  (or psychodynamic theory—not the psychotherapy approach) are sometimes  considered theoretically opposite. However, they share some  characteristics in common. In a similar way, one could consider humanistic and cognitive  psychology to be quite different, yet there are areas of common ground  here as well. Thinking about similarities and differences of schools of  thought can help us understand their unique characteristics. Choose two schools of thought (the mental testing movement,  behaviorism, psychoanalytic theory, humanistic psychology, cognitive  psychology, or psychobiology) and discuss how they differ. What  distinguishes the schools of thought from each other, in terms of their  principles, values, subject matter, research approaches, and applied  methods? Also address which factors they share with each other, using  the aforementioned attributes as they apply. Remember that we are  exploring comprehensive theories of human nature and behavior, not  psychotherapeutic techniques (for example, cognitive behavioral therapy  or psychoanalytic therapy).

The various neurotransmitter systems each release a chemical of a different “flavor” along a unique pathway from one brain region to another. Furthermore, the brain may produce many different neurotransmitter receptors, each responding differently to the same chemical, such that the number of signals that can be transmitted in the brain seems innumerable. Many drugs can drastically disrupt this system, providing an artificial boost to pleasure centers. Some people who experience this pleasure may find themselves in the throws of substance use disorder, unable to refrain from drugs even in the face of society’s disapproval and possible legal censure. *Select a substance that often leads to substance use disorder. You examine the physiological mechanisms of substance use disorder related to that substance and what knowledge of these mechanisms can contribute to a societal response to the problem of substance use disorder.
