As Marriott (2014) reviews the development of statistical thinking over the last century, he provides an interesting quotation from the 1950 address given by S.S. Wilks to the 110th Annual Meeting of the American Statistical Association, in which Wilks states, “Statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient citizenship as the ability to read and write” (p. 79). Review the article, . Take a position. Is it true today that statistics are necessary in modern society? Different cultures conceptualize and measure components of intelligence in various ways. Some cultures value a person’s ability to quickly process and respond to information. Other cultures may value one’s ability to consult with members of the same culture who have more life experience in order to solve problems. Still, other cultures value creativity, formal education, and literacy as a basis of intelligence. With so many variations in cultural beliefs, how do researchers ensure accurate measurements of intelligence among different cultures? For example, can standardized tests of intellectual ability from a Western culture adequately and appropriately measure the intelligence valued by Kpelle farmers in Liberia? For this Assignment, consider how cultures interpret intelligence differently. Reflect on how various cultures measure intelligence. Use your culture of interest and, in addition, select another culture that defines intelligence differently. Consider how you might test different cognitive abilities (e.g., memory, organization, and visualization) in each of these two different cultures.

Compare and Contrast the Five Perspectives on Personality Indicating the Strengths and Weakness of Each Approach The compare and contrast writing prompt requires you to compare two things that are similar yet different. By the end of the paper, you must reach a conclusion that explains the connections or differences you see between the two subjects. Characterized by four major sections — including a title page, abstract, main body and reference list — APA style requires students to write clear and concise arguments while also providing resources for the information presented in the paper. While you can write numerous types of research- based papers in APA style, one popular writing prompt is the compare and contrast paper.

Part I: Introduce yourself to your classmates with your name, location, current employment, and future professional or academic goals. Part II: Researchers try to use a sample of the population that is truly representative of the people in whom they are interested—one of the main reasons for using random selection. Even so, the sample is usually selected from within a particular segment of the social world in which the researchers themselves live and work. For example, in the United States there are some fairly distinct differences between people from the Northeast and people from the Southeast, and the same can be true in many other countries. There are also differences between large city populations and populations living in the countryside. If a psychologist is conducting a study in a particular geographical area of a country, how might regional differences impact the study’s results? What measures could or should the psychologist take to minimize the impact?

According to studies of graduates of bachelor-degree programs in psychology, entry-level positions tend to pay relatively little and may be relatively unsatisfying. Although the positions, pay, and reported job satisfaction of psychology majors tend to significantly improve many years after graduation, those who enter the workforce immediately upon graduation risk at least a few years of less-than-satisfactory employment (Landrum & Elison-Bowers, 2009; Rajecki & Borden, 2011). Although graduate school can be a route to a better paying, more satisfying job, and career, it is quite expensive. A doctoral degree results in most students entering into debt for as much as $75,000 to $200,000 (Stringer, 2016). The median debt incurred for a master’s degree is approximately $25,000 (Kantrowitz, 2011). Using your textbook, the Internet, and the Argosy University online library resources, research possible choices, such as entering the workforce immediately upon graduation, or enrolling in a graduate school. When you hear the word bargaining, what comes to mind? Perhaps you think of collective bargaining, or bargaining conducted on behalf of a group by a labor union. Maybe you think of something more akin to haggling, or negotiating the price of a good at a market. Bargaining, although engrained in our collective consciousness to connote certain things, is really just another way of saying . In your Discussion this week, you explored the concepts of distributive and integrative negotiation. There exists a fault line within the field around which two camps are gathered: those who feel that integrative bargaining is applicable to and beneficial for nearly all circumstances, and those who think that this is untenable, that sometimes very difficult divisions or competitive situations must happen. For this Assignment, you continue this exploration by assessing the relevance of integrative and distributive bargaining (a.k.a. negotiation) for specific professional fields. In the resources for Module Two, you reviewed a significant level of biological information for its impacts on development. Exposure to teratogens during sensitive periods of development presents a serious threat to the overall health of the individual. Tobacco products, alcohol, illicit drugs (marijuana, cocaine, heroin, Molly, etc.), and over-the-counter and prescription medications are common in the lives of many individuals. While the health risks would appear to make the use of these substances prohibitive during pregnancy and even after birth, there is a debate that moderate use or use under physician care is reasonably safe. In this short paper, you will select a teratogen and identify the risks that it presents to healthy development. You will construct a position, backed by research of the use of the teratogen during pregnancy, and summarize the changes in professional opinions as they relate to your chosen teratogen. When Jamie’s mother, Arlene, attended the first-term Parent Teacher Association meeting, Carole, another parent who works as a case manager at a local community mental-health clinic, helped seat her. Over coffee after the PTA meeting, Arlene disclosed her concerns about the changes in Jamie. A little over a year ago, Jamie was kidnapped and sexually victimized over a 2-day period, after which he managed to escape. Arlene explained how Jamie’s life changed since that time: his grades dropped substantially, he started eating his meals alone at school, he stopped interacting with other children, and he has become a loner with no close friends. After completing her narration of Jamie’s current condition, Arlene asked Carole for advice on his condition. She was not sure whether this is a phase. Understanding the impact of diversity on an individual’s cognitive, physical, and social-emotional developmental processes requires an examination of a multitude of characteristics, including gender, race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability, etc. In addition, behavior within a group is important to examine, along with the similarities and differences of behaviors and attitudes across groups. The goal of understanding the impact of diversity is not to determine whether one group is inferior to another, but to gain an appreciation of the breadth and depth of variability in human behavior. Cross-cultural investigation allows for the testing of theoretical concepts and predictions to evaluate their generalizability (Jensen, 2012). Another outcome of studying the results of cross-cultural research is that, as a psychology professional, you will be better equipped to empathize with and advocate for those you will be serving. For this Discussion, you will explore how diversity shapes and influences cognitive and social-emotional developmental processes.

Reply to: Validity is defined in an experiment on how correct the results are of an experiment. Internal validity measures this from within the experiment; ensuring that the variables intended to be manipulated in the experiment are the only ones that were manipulated (Myers, & Hansen, 2012). External validity measures the extent to which the results of an experiment can be generalized to other populations outside the experiment. Ways to increase external validity include aggregation, multivariate designs, non-reactive measurements, field experiments, and natural observation. Aggregation is gathering data and averaging it in many ways (Myers, & Hansen, 2012). There are four types of aggregation: over subjects, over stimuli or situations, over trials or occasions, and over measures. The second way is to use multivariate designs; multivariate designs allow researchers to analyze multiple dependent variables at a time. This allows researchers to look at a combination of variables that will generalize better with populations outside the experiment.

The five stages of dying according to Kubler-Ross include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. With denial comes avoidance, confusion, shock and fear.  Anger  then brings frustration, irritation, and anxiety. Bargaining begins,  you struggle  to find meaning. People often reach out to others that have already gone through this to hear advice or their stories.  Eventually depression takes over. You become overwhelmed, helpless and hostile. People often are close to giving up at this stage. Then comes acceptance – exploring options, new plan and moving on. I believe someone who were to lose a family member would experience one if not all of these phases of emotions, as well as a close friend. In my opinion it affects people differently of different ages. A young child wouldn’t necessarily understand how to process all of these emotions. A teenager would emphasize the anger and add resentment, also not yet knowing how to process all of these emotions.
