One famous worry about utilitarianism is that it demands that we regard our own set of desires, ends, and our own happiness, as just one among a great many others whose lives we might impact. Accordingly, our own desires, ends, etc. bear very little weight when determining what the is, and thus what our moral responsibility is. Think of a situation or area of life in which this might be true, and our concern for our own well-being and happiness has to take a back seat to the concern for the well-being and happiness of the greatest number. What might a utilitarian say to someone who thinks this is too high a sacrifice? Would this be a plausible response? Be sure to back up your answer with references to the resources, and respond to your peers by considering what someone who disagrees with them might say.

Short definitions: = stability, survival, efficiency, predictability >> society = contradictions in society such as we are all equal but society is stratified (not equal) >> stress on members = meanings… how do we create meanings so that we can interact Example: : : Economics is an important part of the society and provides jobs. Part of our non-material (values, ideas, ideology) culture rests on the idea of hard work. This man is failing his responsibility to the society. : Although we state we are an equal society, not everyone has the same life chances (Weber). Some events may have given this man less opportunity or some structures of society deny him opportunity. We should correct the contradictions and find a way to help this member of the society. However, others may argue that he has plenty of opportunity and is not trying (probably a functionalist).

The cognitive revolution  (although considered by some as an overly stated fact) is suggested to  have been a response to the behaviorist movement that rejected  introspection (anti-mentalism), and controversially lead to, what some  consider, a dissolvement of the behaviorist movement. Consider the  following questions about cognitivism and discuss each, basing your  posture on this week’s readings, your past experiences, and your past  knowledge.

Jamie is a county board member. Over the last few years the homeless population has increased across the county. There were not enough beds at the local homeless shelters to begin with and now there are even more people in need of these beds. As a result of these factors, small tent communities have started to spring up in abandoned lots. Many people have voiced their concerns regarding safety, potential drug use, and health issues. Another board member has proposed a resolution banning these tent communities in the county. If this passes, police will be ordered to give the homeless five days to vacate the property or they will be forcibly removed. Additionally, there are still no additional beds or locations for these homeless individuals to sleep. If Jamie was Buddhist, how would she vote and why? The success or failure of treatment can be directly related to the accommodation of these factors. Use the module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research cultural competency. In this course, you have learned that social policies are formulated to solve social problems considered important by a mass of voters, media, and political actors. Social policy is but one solution to the problem—not necessarily the most rational, effective, or socially just. Social policies are human creations and, as such, can be changed. In this paper you will analyze a social policy as a tool for social justice. Research one social welfare policy using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Analyze the policy and address the following: The social problem addressed by the policy The policy objectives, value premises, expectation, and target populations Effects of the policy Implications of the Policy Alternative Policies Write a 5–6-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Make sure to include research in addition to the textbook from credible, scholarly sources.

Using the empirical research article that your instructor approved in the Week 5 assignment, ask yourself: “Is this a quantitative research article or a qualitative research article?” Remember, in quantitative research, the emphasis is on measuring social phenomenon because it is assumed that everything can be observed, measured, and quantified. On the other hand, in qualitative research, it is assumed that social phenomenon cannot be easily reduced and broken down into concepts that can be measured and quantified. Instead, there may be different meanings to phenomenon and experiences. Often in qualitative research, researchers use interviews, focus groups and observations to gather data and then report their findings using words and quotations. Consider how these different methods affect the sampling design and recruitment strategy, and ask yourself how the recruitment of research participants will affect the findings. For this Assignment, submit a 3-4 page paper. Complete the following:

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has received a lot of media coverage in the past ten years. One of the things most misunderstood about the disorder is the treatment. Children (and adults) afflicted with ADHD are often treated with stimulant drugs. Parents are often hesitant about giving their children these stimulant medications. Treating hyperactivity with a drug that increases activity appears paradoxical. Using the Argosy University online library resources, find at least two peer-reviewed journal articles that explain the effect of stimulant drugs (such as Adderall or Ritalin—amphetamine or methylphenidate) on the brains of those with ADHD. Create a brochure that explains the benefits of using stimulant medications and addresses the concerns of parents of children with ADHD. Be sure to use language appropriate for the audience. Include the following in your brochure: Develop a 2-3-page brochure in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Social stratification is the ranking of individuals in a hierarchy of unequal wealth, occupational prestige, and power. It is a feature of society and not a reflection of individual uniqueness or differences. Stratification is a universal feature found in all societies: agrarian, industrial, and postindustrial. Furthermore, socialization and cultures reproduce stratification and transmit it from one generation to the next. Social institutions such as education, the economy, politics, and government maintain the stratified status quo. The goal of these institutions is to provide the needs of society and not a radical transformation of structured inequality. Changes in social stratification are usually slow and incremental rather than fast and revolutionary. This discussion will give you an insight into the difficulties all societies face with regards to social stratification. Based on your readings and understanding of the above issues, discuss the answer to the following question with your classmates:

In the last few years, the fate of the Social Security administration has come into question. The system faces various challenges like the growing number of retirees and the shrinking number of workers paying into the system. In this module, you will look at possible solutions to such problems. You will also examine the political and economic consequences of implementing changes in public policy. Present this summary in the form of a 3-5 page paper which will be used as a supplemental reading in a class on criminal behavior.  In the paper: Remember, this paper will be assigned as required reading for another class, so make sure that you appropriately define all of the psychological terms that you use as if you were writing for someone who does not have any background in the subject. Please be sure to include a cover page and a reference page. The paper should be appropriately formatted and cited in accordance to APA standards.
